Dr. Nagendra Rao obtained first rank in his B. Tech degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering (E.C.E) from Sri Venkateswara University, Tirupathi (1979). He obtained his M. Tech degree with a Distinction in E.C.E (1981) and a Ph. D. in Aerospace Engineering (2005) from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore (2005). He joined erstwhile ISRO Satellite Center (currently URSC), Bangalore in the year 1981 as Engineer-SC, went up the ladder and got promoted to top-most rank of Distinguished Scientist and served as a Director of the Laboratory for Electro-Optics Systems (LEOS), ISRO till the year 2017. He currently serves as a Professor in the Electronics and Communication Engineering Department of PES University, Bengaluru while heading the Crucible of Research and Innovation (CORI), PES University and leads the advanced research projects and industrial consultancy areas. He has rich work experience in the Fields of Image processing for smart imaging sensors and Charge Coupled Device (CCD) based star trackers. He led his team to develop high accuracy star trackers for various low earth orbiting satellites for which he has received ISRO Team excellence award as Team leader in the year 2009. He further led his team to develop various star trackers that are flown in many remote sensing, communication, weather, science and interplanetary missions. He led a research team to develop a solid state fibre optics Gyroscope, that is flown successfully in various spacecraft. He guided his team to develop a 32 bit soft-core SPARC-V8 microprocessor, which is flight tested in many sensor electronics. He worked on the development of complex electro-optical payloads for MARS orbiter mission (MOM) and high precision optical payloads for Earth observation. His field of expertise is embedded systems that contain analog and digital electronics including microprocessors, DSP and FPGAs. He has good experience in onboard software development in C and ADA languages and in algorithm development for satellite attitude estimation in MATLAB. He published in national, international journals and conferences. He is a life member of Astronautical Society of India (ASI), American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) and Systems Society of India. He received an ISRO Merit award in the year 2013, an ASI service excellence award for development of Spacecraft related technologies in 2015 and a team excellence award in 2018. He teaches subjects like Linux, Circuit Analysis and Advanced Embedded systems to graduate and post graduate engineering students. He guides a number of students for their Capstone projects that are related to satellite technologies. He has contributed for the successful development of educational satellite RSAT made by PES university students and staff.
