Electrical and Optical properties of Amorphous Materials: The main challenge in investigating any amorphous material is their non-periodic nature. Never the less, the local structure or short-range structure resembles their crystalline counter parts. I use various spectroscopic techniques like: Raman, IR, EPR/NMR to first investigate the local /short-range structure and then try to correlate th
i) Vanadium based glasses: Vanadium shows a variety of oxidation sates which is of interest for various technological applications. In glasses usually it shows 4+ and 5+ states which is exploited for switching and polaronic conduction. I am interested in doping the vanadate glasses with various alkali ions and check their suitability in battery materials, super capacitors etc.
ii)Tellurium based glasses: Tellurium based materials are most sought-after in optical engineering / photonic applications due to its high refractive index, low phonon energy. I am interested in novel optical properties shown by these class of glasses after doping with rare-earth ions. I try to correlate the optical properties to change in the local environment and exploit it.
iii)Conducting polymer Nano composite: This is mostly a collaborative work. I collaborate with Prof. Raghu Menons lab at Dept. of Physics, IISc. We investigate the transport and structure of the thin films of conducting polymer composites.
